M55-59: Villagrana Runs Away With It in Fresno

• Jesus Villagrana won the M55-59 age group in 49:48 (8:01/mi), finishing a full 1:34 ahead of runner-up Ronald Herms.
• The top three were separated by just 2:52 across 49:48 to 52:40 — then a gap of more than 3 minutes back to 4th.
• Mark Padilla (1:45:44) and Juan Carlos Martinez (1:45:47) finished 13th and 14th just 3 seconds apart after 6.2 miles of racing.
• 15 men aged 55–59 toed the line in Fresno, spanning nearly 70 minutes of finish times from front to back.

Jesus Villagrana, 55, from Kingsburg, owned the M55-59 race from the start, clocking 49:48 at an 8:01/mi clip to take the age group win comfortably. Ronald Herms of Clovis gave chase but crossed in 51:22 — a solid 8:16/mi — leaving a 1:34 gap he couldn't close. David B. Lennon, also of Clovis, rounded out the podium in 52:40 (8:29/mi), making it a clean top three all running sub-8:30 pace.

After that front cluster, the field spread out considerably. Thein Aung of Visalia landed 4th in 56:04, with Richard Soesman (57:51) and Oscar Rosales (58:10) finishing 5th and 6th within a tight 19-second window — both just under the hour mark. Mike Phenicie in 7th (1:02:28) and Rick Reyes in 8th (1:04:58) pushed past the hour, while George Wheeler, the oldest in the group at 59, closed out the top nine in 1:05:44.

The back of the field told its own story. Mark Fawcett (10th, 1:18:07) and Dewayne Jones (11th, 1:27:57) kept their own pace through the Fresno streets, followed by Jack Nagrani in 12th at 1:30:34. Then came the race's most striking near-coincidence: Mark Padilla and Juan Carlos Martinez finished 13th and 14th in 1:45:44 and 1:45:47 respectively — three seconds after 6.2 miles. Apolinaris Torralba, making the trip all the way from Virginia Beach, completed the field in 15th at 1:59:13.
