Five girls toed the line for the F0-14 group at the Two Cities Marathon 10K in Fresno, and 11-year-old B. Wake of Clovis made it look like a different race entirely. Flores, a 13-year-old from Dinuba, ran a steady 11:32/mi to finish in 1:11:38 and hold 2nd place comfortably. Behind her, 8-year-old M. Arizola of Fresno turned in one of the more remarkable efforts of the morning — crossing in 1:26:08 to take 3rd. Completing a 10K at any pace is an achievement; doing it at age 8 earns its own applause.

The race's tightest drama played out at the back of the field, where M. Rivera (12, Fresno) and Ariana Ruiz Sanchez (13, Fresno) ran nearly the entire race in each other's shadow. Rivera crossed 4th in 1:31:48, with Ruiz Sanchez finishing 5th just 29 seconds later at 1:32:17 — a hard-fought battle over 6.2 miles that came down to less than half a minute.
