Two Cities Marathon 10K — F70-74: Smith Sets the Pace in a Deep Local Field

Marice Smith of Fresno owned the F70-74 race from wire to wire, crossing in 1:00:34 at a 9:45/mi clip — a pace that would be respectable at any age, let alone at 71. Her margin over 2nd place was 3:36, and she was the only finisher to crack the 1:05 barrier. Hackney, a 73-year-old from Clovis, was the clear runner-up at 1:04:10, holding a steady 10:20/mi to finish well clear of the rest of the field.

The most compelling battle of the morning played out just behind them. Barbara Dowie, 74, and Blanca Serrano, 70, ran virtually the same race — Dowie crossing in 1:13:21 and Serrano just 21 seconds back in 1:13:42 — with 3rd place going to the elder of the two. Nancy Ayala rounded out the top five in 1:20:05 (12:53/mi), with Sharon Madsen taking 6th in 1:26:16 (13:53/mi).

Tanis Deruosi, 73, finished 7th in 1:37:11, and Consuelo Gutierrez, 74, brought home the final finisher's time of 1:48:45 (17:30/mi) — completing a full spread of nearly 48 minutes across the eight-woman F70-74 field. Every single one of them toed the line and got it done in Fresno on a late-October Sunday, and that's worth celebrating on its own terms.
