Two Cities 10K — M45-49: Kiler Runs Away With It

• Brian Kiler, 41:54 (6:45/mi) — won the M45-49 group by nearly five minutes over runner-up David Aroz (46:44).
• Tightest battle of the morning: David Shifflet (58:54) and Sung Hoon Jun (59:10) were separated by just 16 seconds for 3rd and 4th.
• 12 finishers ranged from Kiler's 6:45/mi to Adan Montiel's 15:42/mi — a wide spectrum of pace and purpose across the group.

Brian Kiler made the M45-49 race his from the start. The 46-year-old from San Carlos crossed in 41:54 at a 6:45-per-mile clip — a pace none of his peers in this group came close to matching. Fellow 46-year-old David Aroz of Fresno was the clear runner-up at 46:44, but the 4:50 gap between first and second tells the real story: Kiler was in a different gear entirely.

The most compelling duel in the group played out well behind them. David Shifflet (48, Sanger) and Sung Hoon Jun (45, Fresno) ran nearly stride for stride to the line, finishing 3rd and 4th in 58:54 and 59:10 respectively — 16 seconds the margin after more than nine and a half minutes of racing per mile. Eric Johnson (5th, 1:01:23) and David Michaelides (6th, 1:03:04) kept the middle of the pack competitive, with just under two minutes separating them.

From William Slowik's 7th-place 1:04:39 through to Adan Montiel's 12th-place 1:37:31, the back half of the field spread out across a wide range of paces — but every one of these 12 men covered 6.2 miles through Fresno on a Sunday morning, which is worth something on its own. Jake Climer (10th, 1:24:36), Steven Cordova (11th, 1:27:51), and Montiel closed it out and rounded a full M45-49 field.
