Carter Dawson made the M30-34 race look straightforward from the gun. Running 5:43/mi on a clear Sacramento morning with a 14 mph breeze, the 34-year-old from West Sacramento steadily climbed through the men's field — moving from 23rd at the first mile marker to 16th by mile two, where he locked in and held that position to the finish. His 12th-fastest split in the field on the mile-two segment underlines that he wasn't just cruising — he was genuinely racing hard through the middle stretch.

Taylor Gall told a different story. The Rocklin runner started sharply — 9th among men at mile one — but faded through the middle miles, sliding to 18th by mile two and holding there. That early pace cost him in the back half, and Dawson's steady build proved the smarter race. Still, an 18:07 is a solid effort, and Gall's 14th-fastest split on the mile-two segment shows he wasn't the only one pushing through that stretch.

Reid Dale (19:19) and Cj Abella (19:50) rounded out the podium and the top four without much drama, but the real entertainment came deeper in the field. Vanegas and Roach ran nearly identical races — 22:27 and 22:28 — with Roach unable to reel in his Placerville rival despite shadowing him to the line. Then Rivera Ocasio and Doyen finished so close that the clock needed two decimal places to separate them: 22:50.05 to 22:50.20, a gap of 0.15 seconds across 3.1 miles of racing.
