Six men aged 76–79 toed the line in Sacramento on a breezy Memorial Day weekend morning — 68°F, clear skies, 14 mph of wind — and Ed Walsh made the most of the conditions. The Placerville 77-year-old ran a composed 29:05, averaging 9:22 per mile from start to finish, and never relinquished the lead. His margin over Michael Beatty was 41 seconds — comfortable, but not a runaway.

Beatty, also 77 and out of Rocklin, was the most dynamic racer in the M75-79 group. He entered the second mile in 221st place among men and steadily worked his way to 213th by the finish, posting the group's most consistent forward momentum. He crossed in 29:46 — quick enough to make Walsh earn it, but just not enough to close the gap. Charles Curran of Sacramento rounded out the podium in 32:56, though his middle segment (1M→2M) was his softest stretch of the race, and he finished 258th among men.

The back half of the field told a different story. Robert Rinker, at 79 the oldest finisher in the group, kept moving — literally. He gained ground steadily from the 3M mark to the finish, ending 309th among men after sitting 320th at the first mile marker. Glenn Bailey (78, Roseville) and Mark Steffens (76, Sacramento) completed the field at 1:04:44 and 1:13:46 respectively, both finishing the 5K on their own terms. Six finishers, six men in their late 70s — and every one of them got it done.
