Women's 5K: S. Wall Leads an 11-Year-Old 1-2 at the Front

The headline writes itself: an 11-year-old from Fresno won the women's 5K. S. Wall crossed in 19:34 at a 6:18/mi clip, leading the entire women's field of 548. Right behind her, V. Wall — also 11, also from Fresno — finished 2nd in 20:05, a gap of 31 seconds. Whatever is happening in Fresno youth running, it is working.

The podium belonged entirely to 13-year-olds. Noelle Frantz of Clovis took 3rd in 20:35, and then came one of the race's sharpest sub-plots: Alessandra Correa and Abigail Correa, both 13, both from Fresno, both clocking 20:45. The places are 4th and 5th — settled by the timing system, not the naked eye. The first adult woman to finish was Breton Cameron, 26, who ran 21:12 (6:49/mi) for 6th — a strong performance, though she crossed more than a minute behind a pair of middle schoolers.

The gap between 6th and 7th was the race's most decisive stretch: Brittany Alcocer Gonzalez (23, Bakersfield) finished 7th in 22:48, a full 1:36 back from Cameron, before the field spread further through the teens and into the 24-minute range. Lexanna Pedraza, 16, was 11th in 25:02, and Lisette Maciel, 25, was the next adult at 12th in 25:07.

At 15th, Sabina Yee of Lemoore deserves a specific callout: 60 years old, 26:16, 8:27/mi. That's a composed, measured run through a field dominated by athletes less than a fifth her age — and she finished ahead of more than 530 women in the process.
