Two Cities Marathon 5K — M50-54: Parnagian vs. Parnagian at the Front

• Justin Parnagian wins M50-54 in 29:06 (9:22/mi), edging fellow Parnagian Grant by just 7 seconds.
• Top four finish within 43 seconds of each other — the tightest cluster in the 18-man age group.
• Jason McCormick and Gilbert Altamirano both clock 39:45, with McCormick holding 9th by the finest of margins over Altamirano in 10th.

The M50-54 age group delivered one of the day's most intriguing storylines right at the top: Justin Parnagian and Grant Parnagian, sharing a surname and presumably a whole lot more, went stride for stride through the streets of Fresno. Justin crossed first in 29:06, with Grant finishing just 7 seconds back at 29:13. Whether family rivalry or family pride fueled the finish, the result was a 1-2 that no one in the remaining 16-man field could touch.

Jason1 Smith of Fresno slotted in 3rd at 29:17 — only 4 seconds behind Grant and 11 seconds off the win — making it a genuine three-way battle at the front. Antonio Virgen Ortega of Parlier rounded out a tight podium chase in 4th at 29:49, and Anthony T. Flores of Reedley was 5th in 31:09, running a notably different gear at 10:02/mi compared to the sub-9:30 pace of the top three.

From 6th onward, the field spread out considerably. Rudy Pineda (35:00) and Mark Locatelli (36:15) led the middle pack, while John Zwonitzer (37:51) and the 39:45 duo of Jason McCormick and Gilbert Altamirano filled out the top ten. The back half of the group ranged from Arvin Fuentes at 41:46 through to Bret Foster of Merced, who closed out the 18-man field in 57:05 at 18:22/mi — a reminder that finishing a 5K at any pace on race day is worth showing up for.
