M20-24: Jacob Alvarez edges a tight battle at the front

• Jacob Alvarez (22:12) won the M20-24 group by just 5 seconds over Zaeed Agbere (22:17), with Aaron Fregoso close behind in 3rd at 22:32.
• The top three finished within 20 seconds of each other — then a 33-second gap back to 4th-place Benjamin Arevalo (23:05).
• Arevalo's 7:26/mi pace marked a clear step back from the podium trio, all of whom ran sub-7:16.

Jacob Alvarez of Merced came out on top in the M20-24 group, crossing in 22:12 at a 7:09/mi clip — but he had to earn it. Fresno's Zaeed Agbere pushed him the entire way, finishing just 5 seconds back in 22:17 at a 7:10/mi average. That's a near-identical finish time with a genuine race behind it: Agbere ran right on Alvarez's heels and simply couldn't quite close the gap. Aaron Fregoso, also of Fresno, rounded out the podium in 22:32, running 7:15/mi — a pace that would have won most age groups and left him just 20 seconds off the top spot.

Behind that sharp front trio, Benjamin Arevalo came in 4th at 23:05 — a notable step off the podium pace at 7:26/mi, but a solid run that left him well clear of 5th. Moises Novoa Diaz (25:27) and zaim chaudhary (25:49) ran close together in 5th and 6th, separated by just 22 seconds and both averaging in the 8:11–8:19/mi range. Christian Camacho (26:07, 7th) and Hunter Shaw (26:51, 8th) rounded out a competitive middle pack that kept the race interesting well beyond the podium.

The back half of the field covered the same 5K course at a very different pace. Alexis Chavez (32:06, 9th) through Jason Miller (58:20, 19th) represent a wide spread of efforts, with Miller finishing nearly 36 minutes after Alvarez crossed the line. Every finisher got it done, but in M20-24 on this day, the story was written in those first 23 minutes — and specifically in the five seconds that separated a winner from a very determined runner-up.
