M55-59: Pedraza Runs Away with the 5K Crown in Fresno

Felipe Pedraza, 56, of Clovis, made this race his own from the start. His 7:12/mi average was a full 73 seconds per mile faster than runner-up Horacio Garcia — a gap that translated into a commanding 3:47 margin at the finish line. There was no drama at the front; this was a wire-to-wire statement.

Garcia, 55, out of Parlier, secured 2nd in 26:08, running a solid 8:25/mi to hold off Fernando Gomez (also 55, Clovis), who crossed in 27:55 at 8:59/mi. The gap between them — 1:47 — was comfortable but not insurmountable, making that mid-pack podium the most competitive stretch near the front.

Just off the podium, Clovis's John Sayers III finished 4th in 31:20, with Eddy Bloodgood of Clovis pressing him all the way to 5th in 31:53. Those 33 seconds were the tightest margin between any two consecutive finishers in the top ten. Carlos Riemer rounded out the top six in 35:22.

The back half of the field told a different kind of story — 18 men showing up on a Sunday morning in Fresno to cover 3.1 miles on their own terms. Sor Vang (10th, 54:08), Martin Salas (11th, 56:57), Terry Murphy (12th, 57:16), and Mark Miller (13th, 58:20) clustered within about four minutes of each other, while the final three finishers — Benedict Villanueva (16th, 1:40:30), Apolinaris Torralba (17th, 1:40:34), and Dwight Tiu (18th, 1:42:50) — finished in their own battle, with Villanueva edging Torralba by just four seconds.
