M35-39 5K: Zapata dominates a 47-man Fresno field

• Miguel Zapata, 37, wins in 20:54 — a 6:44/mi clip that put 1:42 between him and runner-up Vanig Panosian.
• Top three spread across 2:49: Panosian 2nd in 22:36 (7:16/mi), Noel Estrada 3rd in 23:43 (7:38/mi) — each step back on the podium was a meaningful gear change.
• Tightest battle of the day: Beau Kalmes (6th, 28:28) and Oscar Barrera (7th, 28:33) were separated by just five seconds.
• 47 finishers represented a full M35-39 field spread across more than 13 minutes from first to 20th place.

Miguel Zapata made this one look clean from the gun. The 37-year-old Fresno native crossed in 20:54 — a 6:44/mi average that no one in the M35-39 group came close to matching. Vanig Panosian, the 39-year-old from Clovis, was the closest challenger, running a solid 7:16/mi pace to finish 2nd in 22:36, but the 1:42 gap to Zapata was never really in doubt. Noel Estrada, also 39 and also from Clovis, rounded out the podium in 23:43 — running 7:38/mi and finishing 1:07 behind Panosian.

Behind the podium, the race spread out considerably. Carlos Morales took 4th in 26:29 and Michael Coleman 5th in 27:48, with both men running in the 8:30–9:00/mi range. Then came the sharpest duel of the afternoon: Beau Kalmes (6th, 28:28) and Oscar Barrera (7th, 28:33) were locked together for virtually the entire race, with only five seconds deciding a placing between them at the line. Jesse Romero (8th, 29:03), Samuel Serrano (9th, 29:26), and Rudy Rivera (10th, 29:34) formed a tight cluster just past the 29-minute mark, separated by a total of 31 seconds across three finishers.

The mid-pack told its own story of steady, honest effort. Gerardo Uribe (11th, 30:06) through Brandon Pinon (15th, 31:16) were all packed within 70 seconds of each other, each running right around the 10:00/mi threshold. With 27 more finishers beyond the top 20, the M35-39 group was one of the deeper age groups on the course — and Zapata's 6:44 pace stood as a commanding answer to all of them.
