Two Cities Marathon 5K — M70-74: Balcom dominates, seven septuagenarians finish strong

Mark Balcom made this one look authoritative. The 70-year-old from Clovis posted a 9:08/mi pace — a full 2:17/mi faster than runner-up Scott Dye — and the gap of over seven minutes at the finish told the whole story. In a field where experience runs deep, Balcom ran the kind of race that doesn't invite a challenge.

Scott Dye deserves a special mention: at 74, he was the oldest competitor in the M70-74 group and still claimed 2nd place in 35:28. Running 11:25/mi, he finished more than six minutes ahead of Richard Williamson's 41:53 in 3rd — a comfortable cushion that underscores how cleanly Dye separated himself from the back half of the field.

Behind the podium, the race spread out considerably. Charlie Nelson, 72, came home 4th in 47:18, with Ronald Hand (53:28) and Dave Martin (55:07) following in 5th and 6th — separated by just 1:39 at the line, the closest battle of the day. Greg Eisele, also 72 and representing Fresno, closed out the field in 1:03:17, completing a group of seven M70-74 runners who all made it to the finish line in downtown Fresno.
