Masters Women Half Marathon: Clanahan dominates, a three-way thriller decides the bronze

• Jody Clanahan, 46, wins in 1:29:29 (6:50/mi), finishing 4th among all women — nearly five minutes clear of the field.
• Erin Spencer takes 2nd in 1:34:26 (7:12/mi), also holding 7th among women, a comfortable runner-up showing.

• Pendergrass and Zamudio were the big movers late: both climbed from outside the top-20 women to finish inside the top-14 on the strength of strong closing halves.

Jody Clanahan of Bakersfield set the tone from the gun and never relinquished it. Her 6:50/mi average was in a different gear from the rest of the Masters Women field, and she backed it up with the 4th-fastest women's split on the 10K-to-finish stretch — meaning she wasn't just holding on, she was still pressing. Finishing 4th among all women at age 46, Clanahan's performance was the clear headline of the day. Erin Spencer of Fresno was a worthy runner-up, running a controlled 7:12/mi to finish 2nd in the Masters Women field and 7th among all women.

The real drama unfolded behind them. Stefani Pendergrass (Clovis, 42), Lidia Santos (Castroville, 54), and Jolene Zamudio (Clovis, 47) ran nearly identical finish times — 1:42:26, 1:42:53, and 1:42:55 — but the routes they took to get there were anything but identical. Pendergrass entered the 10K-to-finish segment sitting 22nd among women and ran the 12th-fastest women's closing split to claim 3rd. Zamudio made an almost equally aggressive move, surging from 20th to 14th among women on the same stretch. Santos, meanwhile, moved from 16th to 13th — a steady push of her own. All three ran the closing segment faster than they'd been running, but Pendergrass's closing kick was the sharpest of the trio, earning her the bronze by 27 seconds.

Further back, a tight cluster filled out the top ten. Angelica Lucas (1:45:53) and Kristin Sweeney (1:45:57) finished 6th and 7th just four seconds apart, followed by Katie Salcido in 8th at 1:47:16. Rebecca Kirlin, 56, and Debra Avila, 49, rounded out the top ten at 1:48:27 and 1:48:29 respectively — a two-second gap after more than an hour and a half of racing. Across 261 finishers, the Masters Women field delivered a compelling, hard-fought afternoon in Fresno.
