Two Cities Half Marathon: Aguiniga Espinoza rules the F70-74 field

• Leticia Aguiniga Espinoza, 73, wins in 2:32:07 (11:36/mi), more than eight minutes clear of the rest of the F70-74 field.
• Tight battle for 2nd–4th: Connie Vargas (2:40:20), Eva Gardner (2:41:12), and Patsy Schackart (2:41:28) were separated by just 68 seconds across three spots.
• Gardner makes her move late: Despite sitting further back among the women through 10K, Gardner ran the 312th-fastest women's split on the 10K→Finish stretch — ahead of both Vargas (394th) and Schackart — to climb from 406th to 373rd among women and lock up 3rd in the group.
• Adrienne Bachman, 70, finished 5th in 3:08:44 (14:24/mi), gaining ground late with the 461st-fastest women's split on the closing stretch.

Leticia Aguiniga Espinoza of Clovis made this one look authoritative. Running 11:36/mi, she crossed in 2:32:07 and even gained ground on the women's field over the second half — moving from 340th to 326th among women after 10K — to win the F70-74 group by more than eight minutes. At 73, that's a performance that commands the room.

Behind her, the race for the podium was genuinely gripping. Connie Vargas, Eva Gardner, and Patsy Schackart were locked in a 68-second window at the finish. Vargas held the edge at 2:40:20 for 2nd, but Gardner was the one closing hardest — her 10K-to-finish split ranked ahead of both rivals among the women's field, and she moved up from 406th to 373rd among women in that stretch to claim 3rd in 2:41:12. Schackart, also 73 and making the trip from Santa Maria, held on for 4th in 2:41:28, just 16 seconds behind Gardner.

Adrienne Bachman rounded out the top five in 3:08:44, finishing 5th and also gaining positions late — moving from 514th to 489th among women over the final stretch. Saundra Pankratz was 6th in 3:24:38, and an anonymous 74-year-old competitor closed out the seven-finisher F70-74 field in 3:35:51. Seven women in their seventies racing 13.1 miles through Fresno — every one of them earned that finish line.
