Two Cities Half Marathon F65-69: Gilio dominates while a tight trio battles for the podium

• Maryjean Gilio, age 69, wins in 1:57:12 — an 8:56/mi pace that left the rest of the F65-69 field more than 36 minutes behind.
• Three runners separated by just 1:42: Jennifer Detjen (3rd, 2:38:25), Deb Burgess (4th, 2:38:54), and Evelyn Sue Sharwood (5th, 2:39:16) waged a close late-race battle for the lower podium spots.
• Sharwood made the biggest late move among the women's field in the group, climbing from 402nd to 360th among women on the 10K-to-finish segment — the strongest women's split of the four runners jostling for 2nd through 5th.
• Rosalyn Jacobsen rounded out the 14-woman field with a finish of 4:12:37 at 19:16/mi.

Maryjean Gilio, a 69-year-old from Fresno, turned in the kind of performance that simply ends the conversation at the front. Her 1:57:12 — the only sub-two-hour finish in the F65-69 group — was more than 36 minutes clear of second place. At 8:56 per mile across 13.1 miles, Gilio set a pace that no one in this field could touch.

Behind her, Sherrie Flynn claimed 2nd in 2:33:13, finishing well clear of the three-way scramble that played out over the final miles. Flynn moved from 357th to 332nd among women on the back half, a solid closing effort. The real drama, though, was the chase pack: Detjen (2:38:25), Burgess (2:38:54), and Sharwood (2:39:16) finished within 51 seconds of each other. Sharwood was the one surging — she climbed from 402nd to 360th among women on the 10K-to-finish leg, posting the fastest women's split of that trio on the closing stretch. Detjen and Burgess held their positions but couldn't match her closing pace, even as Sharwood's late charge fell just short of catching Detjen for 3rd.

Further back, Diane Printz-White finished 6th in 2:50:44, and Joyce Dendo (3:02:07) edged Theresa-Hanh Dang (3:02:30) for 7th. Mayra Mendez (9th, 3:05:01), Judy McCoy (10th, 3:08:43), Susan Steagall (11th, 3:27:19), Theiry Ramirez (12th, 3:47:46), and Maria Ramirez (13th, 4:05:02) all completed the 13.1 miles, with Jacobsen closing out the group at 4:12:37 — every one of the 14 finishers crossing the line in Fresno on a Sunday in October.
