Two Cities Half Marathon M65-69: Macias Dominates, Petersen Edges Into Third

• Andy Macias (1st, 1:47:43) won the M65-69 group by a commanding 13:44 over runner-up Yutaka Buto, averaging 8:13/mi across the 13.1 miles.
• Yutaka Buto (2nd, 2:01:27) held off Steve Petersen by just 2:22, running a 9:16/mi pace to secure the runner-up spot.
• Steve Petersen (3rd, 2:03:49) closed the second half strong — moving up from 287th to 268th among the men — to edge out 4th-place Doug Fraleigh by a comfortable 15:00.
• Doug Fraleigh (4th, 2:18:49) and Kirby Schlotterback (5th, 2:19:34) were separated by just 45 seconds after 13.1 miles, with Schlotterback actually running the stronger 10K-to-finish leg to claw back positions.

Andy Macias made the M65-69 race his own from the outset. The 67-year-old from Porterville crossed in 1:47:43 at an 8:13/mi clip — a pace that left the rest of the nine-man field well behind. His margin of victory was not a photo finish but a statement: 13 minutes and 44 seconds separated him from second place. He also ran the fastest 10K-to-finish split in the group, the 124th-fastest among all men on that segment.

Behind Macias, the real contest was between Bakersfield's Yutaka Buto and Fresno's Steve Petersen. Buto, 66, held a clear advantage at 9:16/mi, but Petersen, the youngest man in the group at 65, pushed hard over the back half — climbing from 287th to 268th among the men — and finished just 2:22 adrift. Petersen's stronger closing leg made it a genuine chase, but Buto had enough of a cushion to hold on for second.

The battle for fourth was the tightest of the day. Doug Fraleigh (4th, 2:18:49, 10:35/mi) and Kirby Schlotterback (5th, 2:19:34, 10:39/mi) were 45 seconds apart at the line, but it was Schlotterback who ran the sharper 10K-to-finish split, moving up from 416th to 401st among the men while Fraleigh faded from 346th to 393rd. A different race and the order might have flipped.

Dean Williams (6th, 2:28:40), Dan Rudolph (7th, 2:45:20), Richard Jewett (8th, 2:58:24), and Lance Fisken (9th, 3:31:35) rounded out the nine-man M65-69 field — all nine of them completing a half marathon at ages 65 through 68, which is the real story underneath the placings.
