He was the faster of the two from wire to wire, and his margin at the finish was emphatic: 43 minutes and 41 seconds over his only competitor.

Mike Peterson, 83 — two years Athwal's senior — completed the 10K in 2:10:32 at a 21:00/mi average. That's a notably different pace than Athwal's, and the gap widened steadily over the final stretch from the 1-mile mark to the finish, where Peterson clocked the 197th-fastest men's split in that segment compared to Athwal's 173rd. Peterson faded slightly through the closing miles while Athwal held his pace and moved up nine spots in the men's field over that same stretch.

There's no drama in the finishing order here, but there is something worth stopping to appreciate: two men from the same city, both in their ninth decade of life, showing up on a Sunday morning to run a 10K. Athwal takes the M80-99 title, and Peterson earns every bit of credit for seeing it through to the finish line.
