Two Cities Marathon 10K — M30-34: Devane dominates a deep Central Valley field

Joe Devane made his intentions clear early and never looked back. Starting 37th among men, he steadily reeled in runners across the course and cracked the top 30 by the finish, completing the 10K in 50:40 at an 8:09/mi clip — more than three and a half minutes ahead of anyone else in the M30-34 group. That winning margin wasn't a sprint finish; it was a controlled, authoritative performance from wire to wire.

Behind him, Edgardo Contreras ran the most aggressive second half in the group. He entered the final mile-to-finish stretch ranked 60th among men and surged all the way to 37th — a significant move through the field — to claim 2nd in 54:15 at 8:44/mi. Contreras was clearly running faster than the men around him late in the race, and it showed. Hector H (3rd, 56:02, 9:01/mi) and Bernardo Gonzalez (4th, 56:48, 9:08/mi) rounded out the podium in a genuine contest, separated by less than a minute across the finish line.

The middle of the M30-34 field was tightly bunched. Kevin Torrence (5th, 1:00:34) and Mitchell Ford (6th, 1:01:24) were separated by 50 seconds, with Michael Melkonian (7th, 1:01:47) and Jonathan Delgado (8th, 1:02:26) close behind. Notably, Torrence made one of the biggest positional moves in the group on the final stretch, climbing from 138th to 72nd among men — a strong finish after a slower opening. Magnus Beck closed out the 19-man field in 1:36:29, completing a group that represented a wide swath of the Central Valley from Fresno to Wasco to Madera.
