Two Cities 10K — F70-74: Vargas Dominates, Six Septuagenarians Finish Strong

• Connie L. Vargas won the F70-74 age group in 1:11:26 (11:30/mi), finishing nearly 14 minutes clear of the field.
• Marianne Hackney claimed 2nd in 1:25:20 — but her 13:44/mi second-half pace marked a significant fade after a strong opening mile.
• Ofie Cruz took 3rd in 1:35:10, with Tanis Deruosi 4th in 1:38:00 — a gap of just 2:50 between them.
• Claudia Carter (5th, 1:44:18) and Maryjean Gilio (6th, 1:45:07) closed out the group separated by just 49 seconds.

Connie L. Vargas, 73, of Fresno, owned this race from the start. Her 1:11:26 at an 11:30/mi clip was in a class of its own among the F70-74 field, and her move from 164th to 132nd among all women in the back half of the race tells the story clearly — she was running people down, not holding on. Her 134th-fastest women's split on the 1M-to-finish segment underscores that she finished with real pace.

The battle for 2nd was less of a battle and more of a reversal. Hackney of Clovis opened with enough momentum to sit 124th among all women through the first mile — a strong position — but faded to 247th by the finish, crossing in 1:25:20 at 13:44/mi. She still held 2nd in the age group comfortably, but the late-race slide was notable.

Behind her, Cruz (3rd, 1:35:10) and Deruosi (4th, 1:38:00) ran a tighter contest, separated by 2:50 at the line. Both held relatively steady positions among the women's field in the second half, with neither making a dramatic move in either direction. Cruz's 15:19/mi to Deruosi's 15:46/mi was the difference.

At the back, Carter and Gilio — both 70 and both from the Fresno area — finished within 49 seconds of each other, in 1:44:18 and 1:45:07 respectively. Six women in their seventies finishing a 10K is the real headline here, and Vargas made sure the age group had a worthy champion to lead the way.
