Two Cities Marathon 10K — M75-79: Broach Takes the Age Group in a Two-Man Showdown

Just two men lined up in the M75-79 age group at the Two Cities Marathon 10K, but both deserved every bit of recognition for toeing the line. Thomas Broach, 75, of Fresno, set the tone from the start and never relinquished his lead, running 1:10:41 at an 11:23/mi clip — a confident, controlled effort that put significant daylight between himself and his lone competitor.

Harald Schweizer, 76, of Coarsegold, came in at 1:28:03, averaging 14:10/mi. The 17:22 gap between the two is not a razor-thin margin, but Schweizer's 182nd-fastest split on the 1M-to-Finish segment compared to Broach's 132nd shows the separation was built and sustained throughout the race — Broach was simply running a meaningfully quicker pace from gun to tape.

Credit to both men for making it to the finish line in Fresno. Running a 10K at 75 and 76 years old is its own achievement, and Broach's sub-1:11 clocking is a genuinely strong performance in any context. Schweizer, a year older, completed the course and earned his 2nd-place finish. In a field of two, every finisher is also the last person standing — and both of these men stood tall.
