Behind him, the real drama played out in the fight for 3rd. Joseph Galvin — a 52-year-old racing in his hometown of Virginia Beach — held the position at 29:53, but Antoine Fitzgerald (age 42, Ashland, VA) was flying late. Fitzgerald's 18th-fastest men's split on the 4M–Finish stretch — and a charge from 34th to 19th among all men — closed the gap to just two seconds. Galvin held on, but barely. Marshall Tucker (5th, 30:20) made a similarly aggressive late move, climbing from 35th to 23rd among men on the same closing segment.

Further back, the field offered its own rewards. Greg Waddell (age 59, Athens, GA) cracked the top 12 in 31:35, and Paul Beers — 67 years old and from Roanoke — finished 14th in 32:22 at 6:31 per mile. In a field of 1,285 Masters Men, that's a performance that deserves its own moment.
