Ella Zeigler, just 20 years old and representing Olney, MD, turned this into a solo time trial almost immediately. She crossed in 30:42 — a 6:11-per-mile clip on a mild but humid Virginia Beach morning — and was never seriously threatened. Her margin over runner-up Sophia Meagher of Virginia Beach was 5:35, a gap that tells you everything about how far ahead of the field she was running.

Meagher (36:17, 7:18/mi) was equally composed in her own race, holding 18th among all women throughout and matching that steady position on the 2M-to-4M segment. Hannah Ellenbecker of Chesapeake rounded out the podium in 39:49, crossing at 8:01/mi to finish 3rd in the age group.

The most entertaining racing in the group happened just behind her. Ava Michael (40:13) and Hope Cox (40:17) ran nearly identical races — 8:05 and 8:06 per mile, respectively — and arrived at the finish just four seconds apart to claim 4th and 5th. Lynsey McCarthy and Abigail Wagner were equally inseparable a half-minute later, both clocking 8:12/mi and finishing within three seconds of each other in 6th and 7th.

Zeigler's win was never in doubt, but the mid-pack racing across 241 finishers gave the F20-24 group plenty of its own drama to celebrate.
