Jean Bone made this one look almost unfair. The 72-year-old from Richmond crossed in 48:02, cracking the 50-minute barrier with room to spare at 9:40 per mile. On the 2M–4M stretch — the heart of the course — she posted the 542nd-fastest split among all women, a remarkable showing for her age group. No one else in the F70-74 field came close to threatening her.

Karen Franke of Chapel Hill claimed 2nd in 59:17, becoming the only other finisher to break the one-hour mark. Terry Miffleton, 74, was right behind at 1:00:48 — a strong run that made her the oldest athlete on the podium and the last to finish under 61 minutes. The gap from Franke to Miffleton was just 1:31, making that battle for 2nd the tightest on the podium by far.

Further back, the race offered plenty of intrigue in the mid-pack. Valerie Seiberlich (1:03:49) and Karen Clister (1:03:30) were separated by just 19 seconds in 5th and 6th, while Donna Looney and Liz Burns — both from Norfolk — finished within 19 seconds of each other in 7th and 8th. Then came the day's most remarkable coincidence: Linda Rowland and Kathleen McGinness, running in 17th and 18th, matched each other exactly at 1:13:19.

With 62°F temperatures and a light breeze off Virginia Beach, conditions were about as cooperative as a mid-March morning gets. The F70-74 group made the most of it — 52 finishers strong, led by a performance from Jean Bone that was the story of the age group from the first mile to the last.
