Rodney Ragin of North Chesterfield made his intentions clear from the start. Running a 6:59/mi average, he crossed in 34:45 — a full 2:10 ahead of second place — and never let anyone get comfortable behind him. Among the men, he was tracking around 89th–90th through the middle miles, holding steady while the field sorted itself out below him.

James Wood of Harrisonburg was the most dynamic mover in the field, climbing from 158th among the men at the 2-mile mark all the way to 138th by 4 miles before settling at 140th at the finish — a genuine surge through the middle of the race that secured his 2nd-place finish in 36:55 (7:26/mi). Behind him, the battle for the final podium spot was tight. Ken Kieft of Virginia Beach and Dean Dimmig of Perkasie, PA ran nearly the same middle segment — Kieft posted the 163rd-fastest men's split on the 2M–4M stretch, Dimmig the 162nd — but Kieft's earlier positioning gave him the cushion he needed. Gary Hida (6th, 39:00) and Ralph Dravis (7th, 39:22) closed out a strong lead pack before a noticeable gap opened to Glenn Gumpman in 8th at 41:34. From there, a cluster of finishers — Brian MacLean (41:39), Antonio Mendez (41:47), and Doug Barnhurst (41:48) — ran nearly shoulder to shoulder through 9th, 10th, and 11th, separated by a combined nine seconds across three finishers.
