Todd Musher, 45, was simply in a different race. His 5:45/mi average through 8 kilometers of Virginia Beach streets left the field behind from the outset, and nothing in the data suggests anyone threatened him at any point. A nearly two-minute gap to second place is a statement, not a squeaker.
