M80-99 at the Shamrock 8K: Kellum leads a field of octogenarians to the finish

• Ronald Kellum, 80, won the M80-99 group in 57:47 (11:37/mi), finishing more than six minutes clear of the field.
• Cyrus Rhode Jr, 81, claimed 2nd in 1:03:44, with Tommy Welch, 82, just under three minutes back in 3rd at 1:06:32.
• All seven men finished — ranging in age from 80 to 83 — across a span of 43 minutes and 9 seconds from first to last.

Ronald Kellum made the M80-99 group look like a one-man time trial. The 80-year-old from Hampton, VA, crossed in 57:47 — the only finisher to break an hour — running a steady 11:37 per mile through Virginia Beach's mild but humid March morning. With 62°F temperatures and a 9 mph wind off the coast, conditions were manageable, and Kellum took full advantage, finishing more than six minutes ahead of anyone else in the group.

Behind him, Cyrus Rhode Jr (81, Spencer, TN) and Tommy Welch (82, College Sta, TX) ran a quieter battle for the podium. Rhode Jr came in at 1:03:44 and Welch at 1:06:32 — a gap of under three minutes between 2nd and 3rd, the tightest margin anywhere in the field. Harry Shock (83, Virginia Beach, VA) was the oldest finisher in the group and took 4th in 1:14:10, followed by Tom Walsh (82, Norfolk, VA) in 5th at 1:18:06.

Robby Harris (81, Annapolis, MD) and Stephen Bilenky (82, Virginia Beach, VA) rounded out the seven-man group in 6th and 7th, finishing in 1:27:02 and 1:40:56 respectively — Bilenky running a 20:18/mi pace to close out the morning. Seven men, all in their eighties, all finishing an 8K. That alone is the story worth telling.
