Two Cities Marathon 5K — M80-99: Cornelius Pigott Owns the Field

• Sole finisher and champion: Cornelius Pigott, 81, of Clovis, CA — crossed in 38:35 at a 12:25/mi pace.
• Winner by definition — and by deed: With no one else toeing the line in the M80-99 group, Pigott made the field his own.

There's a version of this story that writes itself as a footnote — one finisher, one place, done. But that would miss the point entirely. Cornelius Pigott, 81 years old and representing Clovis, showed up to the Two Cities Marathon 5K on a Sunday morning in Fresno and ran it. All 3.1 miles of it, at 12:25 per mile, finishing in 38:35.

At 81, simply getting to the start line is a statement. Getting to the finish line is the whole story. Pigott claimed 1st in the M80-99 age group — and more importantly, he earned it with his legs, not just by default. The clock doesn't care how many people are in your age group. It ran every step with him and stopped at 38:35.
