Two Cities Marathon 5K — M50-54: Butler runs away with it

• Brad Butler, 22:48 (7:20/mi) — won the M50-54 age group by a commanding 2:29 over runner-up Jason Quigley.

Brad Butler made the M50-54 race look like a time trial. The 52-year-old from Madera ran 22:48 at a 7:20/mi clip — a pace that left the rest of the age group well behind from the gun. His margin of 2 minutes and 29 seconds over Jason Quigley wasn't a photo finish; it was a statement.

Behind Butler, the real contest was for the podium. Quigley (53, Fresno) held off Fernando Gomez (54, Clovis) by 1:31, running 8:08/mi to Gomez's 8:38/mi. Scott Cross added a tidy 4th-place finish in 28:11, but the gap between him and 5th-place Anthony T. Flores — who came through in 31:08 at 10:01/mi — was nearly three minutes, making the top four a distinct cluster above the rest of the field.

The back half of the 17-man field spread wide, with Fernando Valles (6th, 31:39), Leonel Ortiz (7th, 33:58), and Carlos Hurtado (8th, 37:02) each separated by meaningful margins. The final four finishers — Adolfo Rivas III (56:19), Sye Yannone (57:30), Shawn Bailey (59:07), and Richard Mason (59:42) — all came home within about three and a half minutes of each other, a tight little cluster at the back of a field that stretched nearly 37 minutes from first to last.
