Two Cities Marathon 5K — M70-74: Sheela Pulls Clear in the Fresno 70s

• Greg Sheela (71, Fresno) wins in 36:05 — an 11:37/mi clip that put more than a minute of daylight between him and the rest of the M70-74 field.
• Sam Fernandez (70, Clovis) runner-up at 37:07 — just 1:02 back, running 11:57/mi to claim a solid second in a field of seven.
• Charlie Nelson and Robert Chavira — both from Madera — finished 3rd (47:24) and 4th (49:19), separated by under two minutes in the back half of the age group.
• Michael Heiden (74) rounded out the seven-man field in 1:11:24, completing the course at 22:59/mi.

Greg Sheela made the M70-74 race look straightforward from the front. The 71-year-old Fresno native crossed in 36:05, running 11:37/mi — a pace that kept Sam Fernandez honest but never truly in reach. Fernandez, a 70-year-old from Clovis, gave chase at 11:57/mi and finished in 37:07, making it a genuine two-man contest up front. The 1:02 gap between them was the tightest margin anywhere in the field.

Behind that lead duo, a significant gap opened before Charlie Nelson (3rd, 47:24) and Robert Chavira (4th, 49:19) arrived. Both men are from Madera, and their 1:55 split made for the closest battle outside the top two — Nelson edging ahead at 15:15/mi to Chavira's 15:52/mi.

Dave Martin (5th, 55:18) and Byron DeSilva (6th, 59:13) filled out the middle of the pack, with DeSilva crossing just shy of the hour mark at 19:04/mi. Michael Heiden, one of three 74-year-olds in the group, brought it home in 1:11:24 — a reminder that simply finishing a 5K at 74 is no small thing.

Seven men from the Central Valley showed up and ran their race on a late-October morning in Fresno. Sheela took the win decisively; Fernandez pushed him all the way to the line in relative terms. The rest spread across the clock, each earning their finish in the M70-74 age group.
