M20-24 5K: Shubert Laps the Field in Fresno

• Dylan Shubert, 21, wins in 16:08 — a 5:12/mi average that left the rest of the M20-24 group nearly three minutes behind.
• Ricky Flores (19:02) edges Andrew Pouzakov (19:31) for 2nd, a 29-second gap that separated two Fresno runners running in the 6:08–6:17/mi range.
• Zaeed Agbere (21:39, 4th) was the only other finisher under 22 minutes, holding a comfortable gap over 5th-place Kyle Gee (24:23).

Dylan Shubert came to Fresno and simply ran a different race. The 21-year-old from San Jose crossed in 16:08 at 5:12/mi — a pace that would have been competitive in almost any open field — and left the rest of the M20-24 group 2:54 or more behind him. There was no drama at the front; this was a wire-to-wire statement.

Behind Shubert, the real contest was for the podium. Fresno's own Ricky Flores (24) finished 2nd in 19:02, running a 6:08/mi pace to hold off fellow Fresno runner Andrew Pouzakov, who came in 3rd at 19:31 and 6:17/mi. Flores had roughly a half-minute cushion at the line — a comfortable but earned margin. Zaeed Agbere (21) rounded out the top four in 21:39, the only other man in the group to break 22 minutes.

The middle of the pack saw a tight three-way cluster just past 27 minutes: Vince Hernandez (6th, 27:06), Tony Fagundes (7th, 27:09), and Giancarlo Aduana (8th, 27:37) were separated by just 31 seconds across three finishers. After Aduana, the field spread considerably, with Robert Vasquez (9th, 34:50) opening a gap of more than seven minutes to 8th. Matthew Murphy closed out the group in 18th at 59:14, completing a field that ran the full spectrum of the distance.
