Men's Race: Rogerson rules the Shamrock'n 10K from wire to wire

Josh Rogerson made the trip from Colorado Springs worth every mile. Running at 5:29/mi, he led the men's race from start to finish, never relinquishing the top spot through the 5K checkpoint or the final push to the line. His winning time of 34:03 left a gap of more than a minute to the rest of the podium — a commanding margin in a 609-man field.

Behind him, the real drama played out between places 2 through 5. Riley Gardner, a Sacramento local, was sitting 3rd at the halfway mark before unleashing the second-fastest back-half split among the men to move past Thomas Ridder and lock up 2nd in 35:20. Ridder, who had held 2nd through 5K, faded to 3rd (35:47) as Gardner came through — a clear catch-up, not a photo finish. Mathew Ruspil of Reno ran the third-fastest back-half split and finished just two seconds behind Ridder in 35:49, holding 4th throughout. Aaron James rounded out the top five in 36:19 at 5:51/mi.

One subplot that deserves its own mention: 14-year-old Christian Mccabe of Sacramento crossed in 38:42 (6:14/mi) to finish 6th in the men's field. With runners like Declan Molony (9th, 39:34) and Danny Abell (10th, 40:03) behind him, Mccabe outran hundreds of adults on a cool St. Patrick's Day morning in West Sacramento.
