Running a 7:17-per-mile clip through West Sacramento's mild, clear morning, the 56-year-old from Sacramento built a lead that Brad Matsumoto — solid in his own right at 47:38 — simply couldn't threaten. Abbs also posted the 33rd-fastest split among men on the back half of the course (5K to finish), confirming he didn't coast home.

Matsumoto held 2nd comfortably, finishing nearly three minutes ahead of Jesse Ortiz, who came in 3rd at 50:37 (8:09/mi). The real drama unfolded just behind: Jeff Oberlatz was sitting 105th among men at the halfway point and pushed hard enough on the second 5K to climb all the way to 88th, slipping past Ryan Dunn to take 4th by 3 seconds.
