Shamrock'n 10K M50-54: Lao Sue Thao Takes the Green

Lao Sue Thao set the tone from the start and never relinquished it. Running a steady 7:36/mi, the 50-year-old from Sacramento crossed in 47:15 — a margin of 59 seconds over Amir Cackovic (48:14) that left no doubt at the front. Cackovic, 53, from Carmichael, held second comfortably, finishing 36 seconds ahead of Angel Verdugo (48:50) in third.

The most compelling story in the top five belonged to Verdugo. After sitting 73rd among the men at the halfway point, he reeled off the 48th-fastest men's split on the back half to climb all the way to 56th — and locked up the third spot on the M50-54 podium in the process. Cackovic made a similar move, going from 55th to 51st, while Timothy Angello (50:17, 4th) and Joel Germono (51:57, 5th) also gained ground in the second half, each moving up several places among the men's field.

Behind the podium, the race bunched up noticeably. Robbie Her (52:48), Jason Higginbotham (54:06), and Ryan Maguire (54:29) were separated by just 1:41 across places 6 through 8, and the two Charles's — Gunn (56:04) and Ayotte (56:43) — kept it close through the top ten. With 43 finishers total in the M50-54 group on a crisp 56°F Sacramento morning, the depth was real from front to back.
