Shamrock'n 10K F65-69: Gail Egan Edges Marjorie Shock by One Second

• Eleven finishers, wide range: Eleanor Schneider rounded out the field in 1:51:03 at 17:52/mi, covering the same West Sacramento course 44 minutes after Egan crossed the line.

Gail Egan, 69, from Granite Bay, took the F65-69 title in 1:07:03 — but she had to earn every second of it. Marjorie Shock, 65, of Sacramento, was right on her heels at 1:07:04, a gap so small it required the timing system's finest resolution to separate them. Both ran 10:48/mi on the nose. The places differ, the times look identical, and that sliver of margin is the whole story at the front of this race.

Carolyn Mervau was the most notable mover in the second half. Running 10:59/mi overall for a 1:08:12 finish, she posted the 230th-fastest women's split from 5K to the finish — sharper than both Egan and Shock on that stretch — and climbed into 3rd place in the F65-69 group. Patricia Fernandez, 68, rounded out the top four in 1:09:02, completing a tight podium cluster where all four women finished within two minutes of each other.

Beyond 4th place, the field spread out considerably. Deanna Kigar and Elaine Filer ran their own race further back, finishing in 1:21:25 and 1:23:24 respectively, while the final five finishers ranged from 1:34 to just past 1:51. Nan Hawkins and Eleanor Schneider, both 66, brought it home at the back of the group — Schneider finishing in 1:51:03, nearly 44 minutes after Egan, a reminder of how broad a single age group can be on race day.
