Shamrock'n 5K M60-64: Vella dominates with a 7:18 pace

William Vella made this one look easy. The 61-year-old from Elk Grove crossed in 22:42 — a 7:18-per-mile clip that would turn heads in any age group — and put 2:10 of clear air between himself and second place. That's not a close race at the front; that's a statement.

Behind him, Rusty Sanner and Jeff Lawley ran a genuine two-man contest for the silver. Sanner, 62, from Rocklin, held off Lawley, 64, from Citrus Heights, by seven seconds — 24:52 to 24:59. Lawley, the oldest man on the podium, made him earn it. Reginald Daniels of Rancho Cordova added a solid 25:59 in fourth to give the top of the leaderboard real substance, with all four men comfortably under 26 minutes.

The middle of the field stretched out through the 28s and 30s, with Todd Vlaanderen (28:45), Glen Peach (30:07), Tim Jones (30:16), and Brad Meyer (30:33) forming a tight cluster from fifth through eighth — a span of just 1:48 across four runners. Further back, the 39-man field fanned out into the 35-to-46-minute range, with 19 additional finishers rounding out a well-attended age group on a cool, clear St. Patrick's Day weekend morning in West Sacramento.
