Robert Becerril made this one look straightforward. The 55-year-old West Sacramento local crossed in 18:53 — a 6:05/mi average that put serious daylight between himself and everyone else in the M55-59 field. That margin of 1:23 over Don Pontes wasn't a photo finish; it was a statement.

Pontes, also 55 and running out of Rocklin, was the clear second-best story of the day. His 20:16 at 6:32/mi was a cut above the rest, and he finished more than three and a half minutes ahead of third place — meaning the real race for the podium's top two spots was essentially settled well before the finish line.

That third-place battle, though, had plenty of intrigue. Derek Novaes (24:03) held off Matthew Buffleben (24:47) by 44 seconds, with Kok Hin Teo (27:09) and Jeff Scatena (27:20) trading blows just behind. Teo and Scatena finished just 11 seconds apart after 3.1 miles of racing — a gap that likely came down to a final push in the closing stretch. Joe Dominic, Mel Yee, Jason Purdue, and Michael Daponde then clustered between 28:06 and 28:58, making the 7th-through-10th spots nearly as competitive.

All told, 62 men finished the M55-59 group on a cool, clear Sacramento morning — solid conditions for fast running, and Becerril took full advantage.
