M55-59 at Shamrock Half: Callahan Runs Away with It

• Scott Callahan wins in 1:31:10 (6:57/mi), more than 99 seconds clear of runner-up Bil Cullen — a commanding margin in a 171-man M55-59 field.

Scott Callahan came to Virginia Beach from Colorado Springs and left no doubt. Running 6:57 per mile, he moved steadily through the men's field — tracking from 145th among men at the 5K mark up to 129th by 15K — before settling into his finishing position. The gap he opened on Bil Cullen (1:32:49) and John Leimann (1:34:22) was never seriously threatened; by the time the wind and humidity were doing their worst, Callahan was already well clear.

Behind him, the race for third through fifth was its own quiet battle. Leimann made the most dramatic move of anyone in the top five, climbing through the men's field with a particularly strong 15K-to-20K segment. John Lomogda (1:34:51) and Jeff Gavlinski (1:35:24) held their positions more steadily, with Gavlinski's best running coming on the final push to the finish — posting the 154th-fastest split in the field on that closing 20K-to-finish segment.

Then came a long gap before the next cluster. Dave Holland (1:38:30) held sixth comfortably, but places seven through nine produced the afternoon's most dramatic photo. McNicholas, Strippoli, and Anderson crossed in 1:39:51, 1:39:53, and 1:39:57 — six seconds covering all three men after 13.1 miles of racing in genuine heat. In conditions that pushed many runners well past the 8-minute-mile mark, those three squeezed every second out of each other right to the line.
