F35-39 at Shamrock: Kogge controls the half marathon in Virginia Beach heat

Seventy-one degrees, 17 mph winds, and 73% humidity off the Virginia Beach coast — conditions that had a say in every finishing time on the board. Kate Kogge, 37, from Charlottesville, handled them better than anyone in her age group. She ran 6:55/mi from start to finish, and while she drifted slightly in the women's standings from 14th to 19th between the 5K and 10K marks, she never surrendered her grip on the age-group lead. Her 16th-fastest women's split on that early 5K–10K stretch shows she was already moving with purpose when the field was still sorting itself out.

Alexandria Thompson told a very different story. Starting 46th among women, she spent the entire race climbing — 43rd, 40th, 31st — and crossed in 28th, making her the biggest mover in the top five by a wide margin. Her 14th-fastest women's split from 20K to the finish was the engine of that charge, and it earned her 2nd in the age group at 1:32:24, a full 1:40 behind Kogge but well clear of the chase pack.

Katrin Aragon (1:33:38), Ashley Craig (1:34:43), and Kristie McBride (1:35:48) filled out the podium positions just behind, each holding relatively steady through the women's field rather than making dramatic moves. Aragon's 31st-fastest women's split in the 5K–10K segment and McBride's 43rd-fastest from 15K–20K hint at where each found her rhythm. With 3:24 separating third from fifth, those spots were genuinely contested through the warm, windy miles along the coast.
