Katherine Zampolin made the F60-64 race look straightforward, but 71°F, 17 mph winds, and 73% humidity off the Virginia Beach coast made nothing about this day easy. Running 8:23/mi across 13.1 miles in those conditions, the Richmond native steadily climbed the women's field — moving from 267th among the women at the first checkpoint all the way to 221st by the finish. That kind of sustained forward momentum doesn't happen by accident.

Behind her, the battle for 2nd and 3rd was genuinely compelling. Margaret Kopacz of Chesapeake made her decisive move between 15K and 20K, posting the 294th-fastest women's split on that stretch to lock in her position. But Martha Merz of Annapolis wasn't done — she saved her best running for last, recording the 198th-fastest women's split from 20K to the finish and climbing from 465th among women at 20K all the way to 348th by the tape. That closing surge was enough to claim 3rd, but not quite enough to reel in Kopacz, who crossed in 1:54:13 to Merz's 1:54:52.

Ingrid Mathison (1:56:29) rounded out the top four with a remarkably steady race — her gender standing barely moved through the back half of the course. Carrie Plasse in 5th (2:04:40, 9:31/mi) and Linda Corbin in 6th (2:07:04) led a deep field of 116 finishers home, with the top ten all finishing under 2:10 — a strong collective performance given the warm, windy conditions on the Virginia Beach course.
