Shamrock Marathon M45-49: Chen Runs Away from the Field

• Eddie Chen (1st, 2:48:17) averaged 6:25/mi — nearly 38 minutes faster than runner-up Gregory Carro (2nd, 3:04:56), and posted the 16th-fastest closing split (25.2M→Finish) among all women's-field runners.
• Zachary Hoffman (3rd, 3:09:13) climbed from 202nd among men to 99th by the finish, one of the biggest sustained moves in the field.
• Kenny Miller (5th, 3:17:54) made the most dramatic early charge, surging from 431st among men at the first checkpoint all the way to 149th by the finish.
• Brent Carter and Colin Harrington (6th, 3:24:13 and 7th, 3:25:00) were separated by just 47 seconds at the line after 26.2 miles in Virginia Beach's humid, breezy conditions.

Eddie Chen turned the M45-49 race into a solo time trial almost from the start. Running 6:25/mi through 55°F air and 95% humidity, he steadily climbed the men's field — moving from 37th among men at the first checkpoint all the way up to 22nd before settling at 25th by the finish. His 2:48:17 stood nearly 17 minutes clear of the rest of the M45-49 field, and his closing leg was sharp enough to rank 16th-fastest among all runners on that final stretch.

Behind him, Gregory Carro held second comfortably in 3:04:56 (7:03/mi), but the race for third was more eventful. Zachary Hoffman (3:09:13, 7:13/mi) was buried near 200th among men through the early miles, then methodically reeled in runners across the back half, cracking the top 100 men by the finish. His 45th-fastest closing split on the final stretch helped seal third — four minutes ahead of Rob Green (4th, 3:15:50, 7:28/mi), who was himself making a similar late surge through the men's field.

Kenny Miller's trajectory was the most eye-catching of the day. Starting well back — 431st among men — he worked his way to 149th by the finish (3:17:54, 7:33/mi), passing hundreds of runners across the full 26.2 miles to claim fifth. The battle for sixth and seventh played out over the final miles as Brent Carter (3:24:13) and Colin Harrington (3:25:00) ran nearly stride-for-stride, with Carter holding the edge by 47 seconds. The remaining 86 finishers in the M45-49 field rounded out a deep, competitive showing on a humid Virginia Beach morning.
