M30-34 at Shamrock: Shea surges late to claim the crown

• James Shea (2:35:35, 5:56/mi) won the M30-34 race, climbing from 12th among the men to 7th by the finish — the decisive move of the race.
• John Dragon (2:39:13) and Paul Fanto (2:40:05) rounded out the podium, separated by just 52 seconds with Dragon posting the 6th-fastest men's split on the 5K→10K segment.
• Paul Fanto closed with the 5th-fastest men's split on the 25.2M→Finish stretch — the strongest finishing kick of the top three.
• Nick Kouroupis (2:48:21) and Kurt Rishel (2:49:50) battled for 4th and 5th, separated by 89 seconds across a 242-man field.

Virginia Beach delivered a damp, breezy morning — 55°F with 95% humidity and an 11 mph wind — and the M30-34 field of 242 felt every bit of it. James Shea of Charlotte handled it better than anyone. Running 5:56/mi, he sat patiently in the middle of the men's field through the early miles, hovering around 12th among the men at the halfway mark. Then he turned the screws. By the final miles he had climbed all the way to 7th among the men, and his M30-34 title was never seriously threatened down the stretch.

John Dragon of West Chester made his move earlier. He charged through the 5K→10K segment with the 6th-fastest men's split in that stretch, vaulting from 9th to 6th among the men — but the effort didn't hold all the way home. He faded back to 11th among the men by the finish, though his 2:39:13 was more than enough to lock up second in M30-34. Paul Fanto of Washington, DC ran the steadiest race of the podium trio, sitting 13th–15th among the men for most of the race before unleashing the 5th-fastest men's split on the 25.2M→Finish segment to finish 13th among the men and close within 52 seconds of Dragon at 2:40:05.

Behind the podium, Nick Kouroupis (2:48:21) and Kurt Rishel (2:49:50) traded blows across the back half, with Kouroupis eventually pulling clear by 89 seconds for 4th. The chase pack from 6th through 10th — Sean Murphy (2:56:06), Matthew Denlinger (2:56:48), Blake Reinke (2:57:04), Ryan Mccoy (2:59:01), and Connor Mcguire (3:00:04) — compressed into a tight 4-minute window, making for some of the most competitive racing in the field.
