Kathryn Matson simply had a different race than everyone else. Her 6:44/mi pace held through warm, humid conditions — 67°F with 83% humidity and a 15 mph wind — and she crossed in 20:56, a margin so commanding that second place didn't arrive until nearly three minutes later. In a 70-woman F40-44 field, that kind of gap doesn't happen by accident.

Behind her, the real drama unfolded in a one-second photo finish for the silver. Amy Washington (Cleveland, OH) and Kristina Murphy (Bonney Lake, WA) both clocked 7:43/mi averages, finishing in 23:58 and 23:59 respectively. The places were decided by timing finer than the clock showed — Washington held on, Murphy right on her heels.

Fourth through eighth place formed a tighter cluster in the 26- to 29-minute range, with Celeste Blau (26:34) putting a 1:31 buffer on fifth-place Michelle Witten (28:05). Witten, at 44 the oldest athlete in the top ten, finished ahead of several competitors a few years younger — a quiet highlight in an age group that ran all the way down to 30:27 before the top ten closed out with Lydia Farren.
