Cleveland 10K: Sopko rules the M70-74 field

• James Sopko won the M70-74 group in 58:01, the only finisher to break the hour mark.

James Sopko of North Olmsted made his home-course advantage count. Running a 9:20/mi average, he was the only man in the M70-74 group to crack 59 minutes, let alone the hour, and he did it with enough margin to make the win look controlled rather than desperate. In conditions that pushed back — heavy humidity and a stiff wind — that kind of composure over 6.2 miles is worth noting.

Right behind him, Tim Erwin and Richard Hart made the podium a genuine contest. Erwin (Port Clinton, OH) crossed in 59:04 at a 9:30/mi clip, and Hart (Brooklyn Heights, OH) followed in 1:00:16 — just 1:12 further back. Three men, three different zip codes, all within 2:15 of each other at the line.

The back half of the field told a different story. After Schroeder's 1:03:05 in 4th, there was a significant gap before Joe Palencik Jr. came through in 1:15:58 — nearly 13 minutes behind the leader. Mike Gatien (age 74, the eldest in the group) and Thomas Franko rounded out the seven in 1:19:29 and 1:20:53 respectively, separated by just 84 seconds at the finish. All seven men earned it on a morning that didn't make anything easy.
