Greg Carroll made this race look like a different event. In a field of 66 on a humid Utica morning — 87% humidity even at a cool 64°F — that kind of sustained pace demands respect. Carroll, representing Calabash, NC, wasn't racing the field so much as racing the clock, and the clock blinked first.

Behind him, the real competition unfolded between Royce and Kane. The Kingston, ON runner held second at 24:51, but Tim Kane of New Hartford pressed him hard, crossing in 25:20. Thirty seconds is a genuine battle at 5K pace. Thomas Brown (14th, 31:21) and Greg Nolan (15th, 32:00) continued the steady stream of finishers through the mid-pack, while Kenneth Stabb rounded out the listed top 20 at 33:29 — one of four 69-year-olds to finish in the top 20, a testament to the depth this age group brought to Utica.
