M15-19 Boilermaker 5K: Volk dominates as Albany teen sets the pace

• Cameron Volk, 18, wins in 17:36 — a 5:40/mi average that put 24 seconds of clear air between him and the rest of the M15-19 field of 159.
• Tight podium chase: Nicholas Little (2nd, 18:00) and Wyatt Patterson (3rd, 18:09) were separated by just nine seconds, with Maddox Jasper (4th, 18:15) only six seconds further back.
• Local pride: Maddox Jasper of Utica ran 18:15 in his home city's race, finishing 4th — the top local finisher in a field that drew teens from across New York and beyond.
• Veteran of the course: Christopher Carbone, 18, of Barneveld placed 17th in 20:14 — his third consecutive Boilermaker 5K, having gone 10th among men in 2024 (18:06) and 7th among men in 2025 (18:50). A year older and back for more.

Cameron Volk made this race look controlled from the start. The 18-year-old from Albany crossed in 17:36 at 5:40/mi — a pace that none of the 158 other M15-19 finishers could match. His winning margin of 24 seconds over Nicholas Little was decisive, and the gap only widened from there as you moved down the leaderboard.

Behind Volk, the real drama was a three-way scrap for the podium. Little, just 15 years old out of Whitesboro, held second at 18:00 and 5:48/mi. Patterson (16, Bloomington, IL) finished third in 18:09, running 5:51/mi — closer to Little's pace than to Jasper's, who rounded out the top four in 18:15. Those 15 seconds separating second through fourth made for a genuinely competitive chase, even if Volk was already well clear.

The top five closed out with Jack Reale (5th, 18:40) and Gabriel Bryer (6th, 18:48), before a small cluster of finishers between 18:48 and 19:11 filled out the top eight. The 87% humidity on a July morning in Utica is never trivial, and every sub-19:00 finish in that conditions deserves acknowledgment — six runners managed it.

Christopher Carbone's story is worth a moment. The Barneveld 18-year-old has now raced this course three years running, logging 18:06 in 2024, 18:50 in 2025, and 20:14 today. Each year's result is its own chapter, and he keeps showing up — 17th in M15-19 this time, but a familiar face on the Boilermaker start line.
