Dayton Elseth of Utica made this one his own from the jump. Running at 6:27 per mile, the 46-year-old crossed in 20:02 — a margin so commanding that second-place Jim Laurey of Whitesboro, finishing in 22:24 at 7:13/mi, was more than two minutes back. That's not a race decided at the line; that's a statement.

Laurey's 22:24 was nonetheless a clear step ahead of the next wave. John Warner (23:30, 7:34/mi) held third, with Sam Simon III (23:48, 7:40/mi) and Stephen Foster (24:01, 7:44/mi) — both from Whitesboro — pressing close behind. Those three traded just 31 seconds across three places, making the battle for the podium's lower rungs the most competitive stretch of the race.

The middle of the field produced its own drama. Brian Rio (24:35) and Trevor Carpenter (24:41) were separated by six seconds in 6th and 7th, and then came the closest call of the day: Jason Bryer and Eric Sarner both registered 24:51, with the timing system splitting them into 8th and 9th by a margin invisible to the naked eye. Peter Logue (25:00) rounded out the top ten, just missing the sub-25 barrier.

From there, a steady procession filled out the standings — Mike Williams (25:04), Tim Talbot (25:18), and Michael Moxham (25:36) leading the next wave — before 114 more finishers completed the M45-49 field. On a humid July morning in Utica, Elseth ran a different race than everyone else. The numbers make that plain.
