Boilermaker 5K M55-59: Elias Laps the Field in Whitesboro Fashion

Ed Elias didn't just win the M55-59 race on a humid July morning in Utica — he ran a different race entirely. His 20:12 at 6:30/mi put nearly three minutes of daylight between himself and second place, a margin that speaks for itself in a 125-man field. Whitesboro's own Elias made it look authoritative.

Behind him, Daniel Pierson of Oriskany ran a composed 23:09 (7:27/mi) to claim 2nd, with Kevin Tracy — another Whitesboro runner — finishing 3rd in 24:11 at 7:47/mi. The gap between Pierson and Tracy was just over a minute, but Tracy had more to worry about from Christopher Steeper (4th, 24:52) closing from behind. Steeper's 8:00/mi pace kept him within 41 seconds of the podium.

The race for 5th through 8th was where things got genuinely tight. Jed Tukman made the cross-country trip from Greenbrae, California worth it, finishing 5th in 25:07. Just three seconds later, Kevin Powers of Utica and Brian Bailey of Sauquoit both stopped the clock at 25:10 — same displayed time, different places, with Powers edging Bailey for 6th by the narrowest of margins. Michael Flack (8th, 25:16) was only six seconds further back, making it four runners within nine seconds of each other through that stretch.

The field spread out from there, with Thomas Jennings (10th, 26:02) and David Swancott (11th, 26:10) leading a pack of mid-26-minute finishers, and Jack Johnson rounding out the top 20 in 27:22. With 87% humidity hanging over Utica, every one of those 125 finishers earned their result.
