M55-59 Half Marathon: Di Martino Dominates in the Central Valley

• George Di Martino won the M55-59 group in 1:27:16 (6:39/mi) — a 15-minute, 42-second margin over 2nd place.

George Di Martino made the M55-59 race his own from the gun. The 57-year-old Fresno native ran a 6:39/mi average — a pace that would be competitive in nearly any age group — and his 1:27:16 finish wasn't just a group win, it was a statement. His early aggression showed in his progression through the men's field: he was moving forward through the first half before the course's later miles finally pulled his position back slightly. No one in the M55-59 group came close.

The battle for 2nd was won by Carlos Cruz of Reedley, who ran one of the more eye-catching races in the group. Cruz started conservatively — 226th among men after the opening mile — but ran the 1M-to-10K stretch as the 100th-fastest men's split in the field, climbing all the way to 105th by the finish. His 1:42:58 at 7:51/mi earned him a clear runner-up spot, nearly three minutes clear of 3rd.

Kenny Shirley of Madera held his position steadily through the race, finishing 3rd in 1:45:26 at 8:03/mi. Kevin Gregor, also of Madera, gave him a push — running 1:46:54 at 8:09/mi for 4th — but Shirley had enough of a cushion that the gap never truly closed. John Celum rounded out the top five in 1:49:35, while Manoj Khadka (6th, 1:52:18) and Don Kellar (7th, 1:55:27) kept the middle of the field competitive.

Further back, a tight cluster formed around the two-hour mark. Darin McMechan finished 8th in 1:55:29 — just two seconds behind Kellar — while Eric Tigler (10th, 2:04:19), Alan Vong (11th, 2:04:38), and Christian Attah (12th, 2:04:54) were separated by a combined 35 seconds across three spots. Gary Sublette closed out the listed finishers in 20th at 2:14:54, with 14 more M55-59 runners crossing the line behind him.
