• Cathleen Willy, 40, Clovis — 1:26:58 (6:38/mi): won the F40-44 group by over 8 minutes, running 2nd among all women on the day.
• Christine Persel, 44, Bakersfield — 1:35:14: held 4th among women through 10K before fading to 6th by the finish, but locked up a comfortable 2nd in F40-44.
• Kristin Sweeney's charge: entered the women's field 22nd at the first checkpoint, climbed to 15th by 10K, and held it to the line — 3rd in F40-44 at 1:40:24.
• Erin Pullen's fade vs. Katie Salcido's surge: Pullen ran 11th among women early but drifted to 25th; Salcido came from 49th to 33rd in the women's field, finishing 5th in F40-44 at 1:48:37 — separated by 3:48.

Cathleen Willy was the story of the F40-44 group from start to finish. The 40-year-old from Clovis ran 2nd among all women for the entire race — through the mile, through 10K, and across the line — and posted the 5th-fastest women's split on the opening mile-to-10K segment. Her 1:26:58 at 6:38/mi is a genuine statement. It's also a remarkable turnaround from the same race a year ago, when she finished 8th among women here in 2:36:10 — she cut nearly nine and a half minutes off that time and moved six places up the women's standings.

Christine Persel, 44, from Bakersfield, was the group's second-best story. She ran 4th among women through the first half of the race, posted the 8th-fastest women's split on the mile-to-10K segment, and while she faded slightly to 6th among women overall by the finish, she was never threatened in F40-44, crossing in 1:35:14 at 7:16/mi — nearly 8:16 behind Willy but a full 5:10 clear of third.

Kristin Sweeney, 43, from Fresno, ran one of the more satisfying arcs in the group — 22nd among women at the first checkpoint, she reeled in runners steadily through 10K (15th) and held that position to the tape, finishing 3rd in F40-44 at 1:40:24. Behind her, Erin Pullen and Katie Salcido told opposite tales: Pullen started strong at 11th among women but drifted back to 25th by the finish (1:44:12, 4th in F40-44), while Salcido worked the second half of the course hard — climbing from 49th to 33rd among women — to claim 5th in 1:48:37. Laura Parkinson (1:49:15) and Yazmin Ceballos (1:50:40) rounded out the top seven in a group of 98 finishers.
