Two Cities Half Marathon: Donaldson dominates the F70-74 field

• Nikki Donaldson won the F70-74 age group in 2:30:56 (11:31/mi), finishing nearly 7 minutes clear of the field.
• Patti Gerke and Johanna Alandt crossed in an identical displayed time of 2:37:54 — but Gerke edged ahead, taking 2nd by the finest of margins, with Alandt 3rd.
• Places 4 and 5 were nearly as tight: Judy McCoy finished 4th in 3:25:41, just 16 seconds ahead of Adrienne Bachman's 3:25:57.
• Becky Hutson rounded out the six-woman field in 3:49:47, completing the group at 17:32/mi.

Nikki Donaldson, 73, of Reedley made this race look controlled from the start. Running at 11:31/mi, she steadily climbed through the women's field — moving from 526th among women at the 10K mark all the way to 394th by the finish, posting the 363rd-fastest women's split on the 10K-to-finish stretch. No one in the F70-74 group came close to threatening her.

The battle for 2nd was the afternoon's most dramatic moment. Patti Gerke (70, Carlsbad) and Johanna Alandt (70, Vista) ran virtually in lockstep throughout — both clocking 12:03/mi and crossing in 2:37:54. The timing system, however, settled it: Gerke took 2nd and Alandt 3rd. Their late-race splits tell a nuanced story — Gerke posted the 407th-fastest women's split on the 10K-to-finish leg, Alandt the 408th-fastest. That's a catch-up race in miniature, with Alandt closing fractionally faster over the final stretch but Gerke holding just enough of an early cushion to secure the place.

Further back, McCoy and Bachman staged their own quiet duel. McCoy (70, Laguna Niguel) ran at 15:41/mi to finish 4th in 3:25:41, while Bachman (71, Fresno) matched her stride for stride at 15:43/mi, finishing 5th just 16 seconds later. Becky Hutson, 73, of Clovis closed out the group in 3:49:47 — six women in their 70s finishing a half marathon in Fresno on a fall Sunday morning, which is its own kind of statement.
